What Does It Take to Become a Locksmith?

Whether you are looking for a career change, or you’ve been laid off, retired, or just looking for additional income, the locksmith industry is an excellent opportunity. People will always lock themselves out of their homes, cars, and offices. They will always lose their keys to their homes, cars, and businesses. Locks will always need to be re-keyed, repaired, and replaced. There is not another business you can start with such low start-up costs with such great returns. You also have the freedom to be your own boss, have flexible hours, and work as a private contractor, all at a very minimal investment. No matter how far technology advances, people will always need a locksmith!

How Can I Get Started?

The Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) offers literally hundreds of classes to help you become a certified locksmith. Each state varies with its regulations, so check with your state to determine whether you’ll need to secure special certification before you begin working as a locksmith. In addition, keep in mind that having a license may give you an edge to land a new job as a locksmith. Clients may be more willing to hire you if you are certified. It also helps to attend seminars, trade shows, and stay current with all rules and regulations through various courses. While most locksmiths can work on locks of all kinds, many choose to specialize in different fields of the profession. Some focus primarily on automotive locks, others prefer to work with home locks or even security protection. You can always learn a different area, but the main concepts, will always remain the same, and that is the security and safety of the client.
