Lock Function

The Secrets Behind the Lock

There are many types of locks, and each lock has its own mechanism and function. The primary function of a lock is to keep you or your valuables, safe. Here are a few types of locks, and their functions:

• Pin-tumbler Lock – Or more commonly known as the Yale lock. It was named after the father and son duo, who refined the lock design, and turned it into a recognizable form that is used today. The Pin-tumbler is a lock mechanism that uses pins of varying lengths to prevent the lock from opening without the correct key. Pin tumblers are most commonly employed in cylinder locks.

• Padlock – Are portable locks used to defend against theft, vandalism, sabotage, unauthorized use, and even harm. They are most commonly found on gym lockers or on gates, to protect businesses. A padlock is composed of a body, shackle, and a locking mechanism. Padlocks with modular locking mechanisms can often be taken apart to change the tumblers or to service the lock, and are usually automatic, which does not require the use of a key to close the lock.

• Cylinder Lock – Is a lock constructed with a cylinder that a locksmith can easily unscrew to facilitate rekeying. Cylinder locks may be altered by a locksmith, and contain several types of locking mechanisms. They are also susceptible to a burglary technique, known as lock snapping or cylinder snapping. In this process, a burglar uses the right amount of force to the lock until it breaks into two pieces. That’s why it’s crucial to let a locksmith secure the lock for you.

• Disc tumbler Lock – Is a lock composed of slotted rotating detainer discs. A specially cut key rotates these discs like the tumblers of a safe to align the slots, allowing the sidebar to drop into the slots, which then opens the lock. Disc tumbler locks are usually hard to pick and are known as high-security locks as well. A sidebar inside an opening in the lock cylinder around the discs and an edge in the casing obstructs the movement of the cylinder
